Where the Flowers Bloom originated as a submission for the OKC 48 Hour Film Project by team Ride on Time, led by directors Kaden Wittig and Aldair Gutierrez. During the competition, the team drew Drama as their genre and chose to create a slice-of-life coming-of-age story following a young girl growing up in a motel. After premiering at the Harkins Theatre in Oklahoma City and winning Best Use of Dialogue at the 48 Hour Film Project awards ceremony, the film entered the film festival circuit.
The film’s influences combine indie realism—such as The Florida Project and the works of Richard Linklater—with loose, naturalistic French New Wave sensibilities, drawing inspiration from films like François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows. In addition to cinematic influences, the team infused the story with elements drawn from their own lived experiences and childhoods.
